Everything All At Once

Everything
All At Once

They take and take and take and take.
Blood. Sweat. Tears. Sacrifice. Fear.
The invoice never changes. They just keep sending it.

And when you’ve paid everything — when there’s nothing left to give — they take that too. They take the disabled. They take the vulnerable. They take your mother’s benefits and your child’s future and the ground beneath your feet and they do it all at once
on purpose.

Because a person who is drowning can’t fight back. Because frozen is what they need you to be.

And half of us handed them the flood.
Willingly. Wrapped it up in a pretty bow. Put a red hat on it. Called it freedom.
Our own worst enemy.
