It’s surreal when the bells toll for WWIII
and instead of telegrams
we get LEGO music videos.
And it’s even more surreal
that our leaders can’t understand it.
That the most accurate depiction
of American foreign policy in recent history
came in the form of plastic bricks
from the country we’re supposed to hate.
They call it propaganda.
But propaganda for whom?
White rich men have been rewriting this story
for so long
they forgot the rest of us
can read.
The only history he wants to hear
is his story.
The only accounts that matter
are bank accounts.
So they call it propaganda
when someone else
finally tells the truth.
They need you to believe in the other.
And they are very good at making them.
They made the other out of your neighbors.
Out of your friends.
Out of your own children —
the gay one,
the trans one,
the one who asked too many questions
and stopped coming home for Christmas.
The liberal.
The immigrant.
The one who didn’t clap
at the right moment.
The other feels so far away.
But not really.
They will tell you who the other is
and you will believe them
because it is easier
than looking at what you’ve lost.
So when they point across the ocean
and say there —
there is your enemy —
you already know how to do it.
You’ve been practicing
on your own family.
And I guess it makes it easier
to send our children to die
in a pointless war
when they are also the other.
